Unveil Your Brand's Full Potential with Our Strategic Guiding Light Process

Your organization may have answers. It may not have one answer.

Ask several leaders in the same organization:

  • Why do we exist?
  • What values are truly non-negotiable?
  • Where are we going?
  • What problem are we built to solve?
  • Why should the right customer choose us?
  • Who is that customer?
  • How should we express this in words and visual form?

The leaders may care deeply about the organization and still answer differently. That difference reaches daily decisions, hiring, sales, marketing, customer experience, and the work outside partners are asked to produce.

When the foundation lives in separate heads, old documents, or scattered presentations, the organization is forced to define itself again every time it starts something important.

Important boundary

The opening assessment may reveal questions about strategy, structure, people, systems, capital, roles, or tactics. Guiding Light records those findings. It does not try to solve all of them inside the base program.

Our Guiding Light Program

A guided virtual process, not another folder of worksheets.

Guiding Light is EXTEND GROUP’s branded foundational clarity process. It is led by Shawn Collins and begins with the GiANT Organizational Clarity tool as an organized starting point. The opening assessment scans the organization as a whole. Guiding Light then works at the foundational root: why the organization exists, what it values, where it is going, what problem it solves, how it is different, how that meaning should be expressed in words and visual form, and whom it serves.

The GiANT Organizational Clarity tool gives the opening assessment a disciplined structure. Shawn Collins then applies nearly 30 years of marketing communications and brand-building work. EXTEND GROUP processes, develops, and documents the approved foundation.

Important boundary

The opening assessment may reveal questions about strategy, structure, people, systems, capital, roles, or tactics. Guiding Light records those findings. It does not try to solve all of them inside the base program.

Why Start Broad?

Because unclear foundations show up downstream.

People may not know what to do each day. Leaders may disagree about how the organization wins. Systems may feel strained. Marketing may change from one campaign to the next.

Guiding Light asks broad questions so the organization can see the whole condition. Then it starts at the root: purpose, values, mission, vision, problem, difference, expression, and customer.

Guiding Light does not ignore strategy, structure, or tactics. It identifies where they may be unclear, then establishes the foundation needed to address them responsibly.

The Foundation You Will Approve

Organizational Clarity Assessment

Scan roles, responsibilities, values, mission, vision, people, systems, capital, strategy, and daily work to see where clarity is strong or weak.

Core Values

Define the non-negotiable principles that guide conduct, decisions, culture, and stakeholder relationships.

Mission

State why the organization exists, whom it serves, what needs it addresses, and what lasting contribution it seeks to make.

Vision

Define the desired future, long-range direction, intended effect, and the future the organization is working toward.

USP, Positioning, and Expression Direction

Clarify the problem the organization solves, its meaningful difference, its market position, and the language and visual cues that should express the foundation.

Primary Customer Avatar

Define the primary customer or stakeholder, including needs, pressures, goals, buying factors, barriers, and communication preferences.

Secondary Customer Avatar

Define a secondary audience, how it differs from the primary audience, and why it matters to the organization.

A brand should express decisions leadership has already made.

Writers, designers, web teams, and marketing partners can help express your organization. They should not be forced to decide your purpose, difference, customer, or position on your behalf.

Guiding Light establishes the approved foundation and provides initial direction for the words, themes, image cues, and visual considerations that should express it. Full naming, logo design, identity systems, websites, and campaigns are separate phases.

How Guiding Light Works

Set the timeline:

We begin with a Zoom program review to confirm participants, decision authority, responsibilities, and working dates.

Complete one assessment:

You receive one private assessment link by email and complete it with as much relevant information as possible.

EXTEND GROUP processes the answers:

We test the responses for clarity and consistency, identify gaps, and prepare recommended language and improvements.

Meet by Zoom:

Shawn Collins leads a clarity call to approve or revise the findings.

Repeat:

Once a section is approved, the next assessment is released.

Receive the final document:

After all seven sections are approved, the work is assembled into the Guiding Light Foundational Standards Document.

What You Receive

One approved foundation your organization can use.

  • Organizational clarity baseline.
  • Core values, definitions, and behavioral meaning.
  • Mission and supporting purpose language.
  • Vision and future-state language.
  • Problem statement, USP, value direction, and positioning statement.
  • Core message direction and initial visual expression guidance.
  • Primary and secondary customer profiles.
  • Known assumptions and customer-validation needs.
  • Future-phase findings related to strategy, structure, people, systems, capital, roles, or tactics.
  • Application notes for leadership, culture, brand, communication, marketing, hiring, and approved vendors.

The final document is delivered as a PDF or editable Microsoft Word file.

Who Guiding Light is For

Guiding Light may be the right starting point when:

  • Your organization has never documented its foundation.
  • Your mission, vision, or values are dated, vague, or rarely used.
  • Leadership gives different answers about the organization, brand, or customer.
  • You are preparing for growth, a leadership change, a rebrand, a website, or a major marketing effort.
  • Important standards live in people’s heads instead of one approved document.
  • You need a shorter virtual process instead of a long live workshop series.

Guiding Light is not the right fit when:

  • You want a quick slogan, logo, or campaign without leadership participation.
  • You expect EXTEND GROUP to invent the organization with little client input.
  • You need full market research or broad stakeholder interviews included in the base scope.
  • No one has authority to make final decisions.
  • Your foundation is already current and aligned, and the known need is strategy, structure, or execution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Guiding Light fully self-service?

No. Your team completes each assessment independently. EXTEND GROUP processes the responses, and Shawn Collins leads a Zoom clarity call for every section.

Is Guiding Light the same as the full Organizational Clarity program?

No. Guiding Light is the shorter virtual starting point. It assesses broad clarity, settles the foundation, and records needs that may require deeper later work.

Why ask about strategy, structure, systems, or daily work if those are not included?

Those questions show how clear the organization is as a whole. They reveal where a weak foundation may be producing downstream confusion. The findings are recorded for later phases.

How long does the program take?

The standard schedule is 10 to 12 weeks. Timing depends on assessment completion and leadership approval.

Who should participate?

The final decision-maker should participate, along with a small group of leaders who know the organization and can help settle the standards.

Do we need existing statements before we start?

No. Existing material helps, but the process is built to gather what the team knows, identify what is missing, and improve what is weak.

Does Guiding Light include customer research?

Not in the base program. Customer profiles are working strategic profiles based on client input and available records. Validation can be added later.

Does it include a logo or full brand identity?

No. It includes initial verbal and visual expression direction. Naming, identity design, websites, and campaigns are separate scopes.

What happens after the program?

The final document becomes the reference point for later leadership, strategy, brand, website, communication, marketing, and implementation work.

Before you decide what to do, agree on who you are.

Schedule a Guiding Light Fit Call to review your current situation, confirm whether the program is the right starting point, and determine the appropriate proposal scope.
